Knives are awesome, in fact knives are some of the oldest tools we have to date, dating all the way back to our oldest hominin ancestors of about 2 million years ago. They would grab rocks and use a method called percussion flaking which would then break the rocks into sharp pieces known as Oldowan tools.
With that in mind, knives are a true testament of being a tool that will is “timeless.” Imagine that, knives are one of the most timeless tools/gifts you can get (and not as expensive as diamonds, in fact here is a post explaining diamonds and when they first became used as engagement rings… it wasn’t until the 1930’s when they were being used as rings, before that they weren’t really used at all.)
Anyways enough of the history lessons on knives (haha), I have comprised a list of some of the coolest knives that aren’t too expensive that any knife enthusiast would love to have in their tool box (or pocket). And they are all below $100, and with Amazon Prime shipping you could get them in two days, which is just in time for Christmas! (You can sign up for Amazon Prime here)
A few Things to Keep in Mind When Choosing a Knife
Some people get confused or just don’t know what to look out for when choosing a knife, especially when it’s for someone else…
I still remember when my mom and I went out to pick out a knife for my dad; full tang, semi tang? Steel type? Edge retention? Corrosion and rust resistance? Brand of knife? Type of knife?
These are just a few questions we didn’t know to ask at that time we picked out a knife, so here are a few things to keep in mind when choosing a knife, we will try and keep it simple and to the point.
- Is it full tang? You should find one that is, these are arguably some of the strongest knives out there due to the full tang making them sturdier.
- Edge retention – If the knife cannot hold it’s edge then what good is it? Having to sharpen the blade all of the time is bothersome and frustrating for knife owners.
- Flipper or fixed? This depends on what preference, however flipping knives are better for tasks that don’t require as much oomph.
- What kind of steel? If you get a lower quality steel then that knife can rust, corrode or break easier. (Here is a post about the best knife metals out there)
- Is it bulky? Depending on the person they may want a thinner knife which means you will want something smaller like the Spyderco knife I reference as #2.
These are just a few things to keep in mind, however you can check out his post that is priceless because it can save you time, money and the hassle of trying to find a good knife. (It’s one of my favorites)
Unique and Comprehensive Knife Enthusiast Christmas Gift Guide
I always rant and rave about how awesome and valuable Kershaw knives are, especially the ones with SpeedSafe. This is a great knife, and you get a ton of bang for your buck because it is a Kershaw knife at an extremely good price on Amazon.
It’s sharp, mean, clean and light. Which means that you can slice just about anything with this knife because it is crafted and sharpened from a Sandvik 14C28N steel that keeps an edge, however it can rust easily if left in water or moist areas. The best way to care for this knife is to make sure it is dry and not being left in water.
“The build quality on my knife is excellent for the price point.” – Amazon Reviewer
This will make a great gift for any knife enthusiast that wants a knife that will stand the test of time. However, the only con of this knife is that it does not have a serrated edge, which means it would be hard to cut through thick rope, potentially meat, or rubber with this knife.
Another one of my favorites; a very valuable knife that is great for cutting through just about anything and would look great with any collection. The only thing it does “lack” is that it is only serrated, thus making clean cut slices impossible.
This knife is crafted from a Japanese steel that is known for its corrosion and rust resistance which means…
- It won’t rust if you leave it in water (unless you leave it for days on days)
- It will be a long lasting knife for whomever it’s being bought for (more bang for your buck)
- Won’t have to buy as many knives due to it lasting so long
“Best pocketknife anywhere, at any price” – Amazon Reviewer
On top of that, it is made by Spyderco, which means that this knife is well crafted and designed to cut very well and last a long time. Whoever gets this knife as a gift will be very happy with it.
Another excellent choice as a gift because this Cold Steel knife is crafted with an awesome steel that holds its’ edge for a long time, which means the person who gets this knife won’t have to spend a lot of time sharpening this knife. It is a bit pricier, but you can still get it at a bargain on Amazon compared to other stores.
If you have been trying to find a great knife for someone then look no more…
“A startlingly excellent knife & all for about HALF of what it would have costed direct from the manufacturer” – Amazon Reviewer
I am not kidding about how amazingly valuable this knife is, the only “gripe” about it would be that the sheath is a little clunky and can be a bit frustrating when trying to pull the knife out, other than that it is a great knife for any knife enthusiast to get as a gift.
The SOG is a powerful knife with deep finger grooves for handling which makes it an excellent knife. The finger grooves can really help with controlling the blade (which can prevent self-inflicted wounds).
This makes for an awesome gift because of how well it is crafted along with it being under $100, making it a very valuable knife for whomever you are getting it for, even if it is yourself.
“It’s an awesome knife and is worth every penny.” – Amazon Reviewer
It is also a full tang knife which means that it will be very sturdy and won’t feel clumsy or loose in the handler’s hands either! This is a very important quality to have in knives, because if it is loose then it will either A. Break or B. fall out of your hand or C. Hurt the user of the knife.
Talk about a knife that can get the job done; this knife may be last on our list, but is certainly not least. Buck knives are some of the best knives you can get in the market because of how long they retain their edge and the amount of value you get from their knives.
If you live with someone who does a lot of skinning or cutting that needs something that can pierce and slice smoothly, then look no more. Buck knives are crafted in the USA and are made with quality of slicing in mind.
“I got this for my dad for Christmas, he was pleasantly surprised” – Amazon Reviewer
You really cannot go wrong with this beauty of a knife. Trust me, it will make a great gift for any knife enthusiast out there.
“I have many knives even some high end and all I can say is this knife is a steal for the price!” – Amazon Reviewer
The Smith & Wesson SWMP4LS Linerlock knife has to be one of our favorites because of how well it is made, and it has a military style and feel to it.
Smith & Wesson has been around for a long time and they know what they are doing: they make great personal defense weapons and the SWMP4LS is perfect for any knife enthusiast who is looking to add a knife to their collection.
It has a spring assisted opening (make sure it complies with local laws) and an integrated glass breaker which makes for a great addition to any car. It resharpens easily and holds an edge for quite a while (a couple months, but that all depends on usage).
The S&W is a great purchase for any knife enthusiast!
If you end up getting any of these knives, then let us know in the comment section below! We would love to know which one you got for whomever!
And remember happy holidays!
