Looking for the Best Fishing Knife? Look No More

best fishing knife

Fishing is an excellent way to pass time, acquire food, bond with others or to make a living… whatever your reason may be, I know that having a great knife to aid you in your fishing is important for a few reasons…

  • Killing fish efficiently
  • Potentially fending off animals that could harm you
  • Utility purposes (cutting line, trimming ends, or even cutting kindling for a fire)

With that said, knives are very important for fishermen (you can read more here as well to see why they are so important, it’s a pretty neat interview with Nick Doumel, very informative as well) and you should always bring a good knife with you on your fishing trips.

3 Things to Keep in Mind When Choosing a Fishing Knife

  1. Pick a sturdy knife, you never know what situation you could be in that would require your knife, and a flimsy one won’t cut it… ha, no pun intended.
  2. A knife with a straight and serrated edge is beneficial for many reasons, the straight edge can slice cleanly through fish, while the serrated edge can tear through rope and lines… either get a knife with both straight and serrated edges, or have two separate knives, either way works. (I have picked out both styles)
  3. I prefer a flipping/folding knife for many reasons that I am not going to explain here, but overall it is easier to stow away and can be pulled out in a second when needed, however pick a knife with a strong locking mechanism, you don’t want your knife to come open by itself… ouchie!

You can read more general knife choosing tips here…

These are a few things to keep in mind, which I am sure there are more, but these are the 3 most common things to keep in mind when choosing a fishing knife.

How to Maintenance Your Fishing Knife Without Any Hassle

These guys do a good job at sharpening their fishing knives, which is beneficial for you because they can show you how to sharpen the knives you would use for fishing. (You can also read here about some of the best knife sharpeners out on the market) Either way let’s hop into the list of knives that I have found that prove to be some of the best fishing knives the market has to offer…

Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Best Fishing Knife

Benchmade 551H2O Orange Plain Edge Griptilian Knife

Benchmade 551H2O Orange Plain Edge Griptilian Knife First up is the Benchmade Griptillian; a very superb knife that is known for it’s sharpness and edge retention. It is a bit pricier than most knives, but would make for a great match for fishing. However I would suggest coming up with a strap to wrap around it to prevent yourself from dropping into a watery abyss.

Either way, this knife is nicely priced for the quality that you are receiving… out of the box it is extremely sharp and can easily slice through a fish without any problems. The only thing the blade lacks is a serrated edge, however that is a minor flaw due to how useful this knife will be for you.

The knife feels great when holding it, and is nicely balanced.” – Amazon Reviewer

This is a nicely balanced knife that has a ton of traction when you grip, so you won’t have to worry about it slipping out of your wet hands. On top of that, I have found that it is easy to sharpen and makes for a great knife for about any event, whether it is fishing, hunting, or use it to cut material while working. Overall, an excellent Knife.

Kershaw Ken Onion Leek Serrated Folding Knife with SpeedSafe

One of my all time favorite knives that I raved about as my #1 choice for the best knife to bring while camping, because of how well made this knife is; it is designed by Ken Onion and crafted by Kershaw, which means that this knife is one of the best knives that you can grab on the market.

First off a little history about Ken Onion and why he pertains to this knife… Ken Onion is an elite knife maker, which means when he teamed up with Kershaw and invented the SpeedSafe technology, this knife became the pinnacle of success for him and the Kershaw brand name.

Anyways, this knife is very nicely priced and is a bargain for the quality you are getting.

“It’s razor sharp right out of the box and keeps an edge very well.” – Amazon Reviewer

Overall, this is a seriously sharp knife that has a good grip on it with a locking mechanism (SpeedSafe) that will open the knife smoothly and easily without you having to worry about it cutting you. Plus you get the most bang for your buck with this one (one of my favorites.)

Spyderco Military G-10 Handle Plain Edge Knife

Sypderco makes some incredible knives, and this is one of their best ones for fishing; it’s a plain, sharp edge knife that works perfectly for slicing through fish like they were air. The G-10 is crafted from CPM-S30V which is a major bonus with this knife because that means it has superior edge retention and rust resistance (which is a must if you are using it in water or for wet fish).

It’s a no frills knife made with high end materials and quality craftsmanship.” – Amazon Reviewer

On top of that it has a round hole which you can tie a line around it so that you don’t lose it in the water. With this in mind it also has Nester Linerlock® which keeps the knife securely locked in place so that you don’t run the risk of it opening on it’s own and cutting you. The handle is also laminate scales which will give you a secure grip and will create traction between you and the knife so that it doesn’t slip out. Which is a major bonus for fishing because it won’t slip into the water (although it can happen.)

The best FOLDER I have ever owned or held.” – Amazon Reviewer

Overall a very solid knife that is made with precise accuracy that can slice through the competition and will make for a great knife for more than just fishing purposes.

Smith & Wesson SWFR2S Extreme Ops Knife with Coated Tanto

Smith & Wesson SWFR2S Extreme Ops Knife with Coated Tanto Blade and Rubber Coated Handle, Black

This is the all affordable, don’t worry about losing it kind of knife. Still a decent knife for the price and is the cheapest out of the selection but gets a mention because it makes for a great utility knife and you won’t be out a pretty penny if you lose it.

This is an excellent knife; very smooth blade motion, locks into place without jiggling, very sharp blade.” – Amazon Reviewer

This knife plays no BS and means business… it is sturdy and sharp which means it won’t jiggle in your handle and will cut through just about anything you need to cut and tear apart. It has a serrated and plain edge which makes it versatile and can do just about any job (besides cutting down a tree, ha, but maybe some kindling).

It is crafted from 7Cr17 high carbon stainless steel blade which means that it won’t rust easily and is built to withstand wear and tear (all dependent on how much you use it). This knife will make the perfect pair if you just need a fishing knife to slice through anything and get the job done.

Case Cutlery 00120 Fishing Knife with Stainless Steel Blades

Another solid choice for being one of the best fishing knives out there; it comes with both a plain blade and scaler so think of it as a 2 in 1 knife which means you are getting more bang for your buck.

Bought these as gifts for the fishermen in our family and I’m sure the guys will love it.” – Amazon Reviewer

This makes for a great fishing knife because it comes with two blades that are crafted from Tru-Sharp which means it will be very sharp, however I wouldn’t NOT use these knives for any heavy tasks (cutting wood or thicker rope/wire because it can damage the knives very easily) however they are great for slicing through thin rope, line and excellent at cutting fish.

The scaler is a real blessing when preparing scaly fish for baking or barbecuing.” – Amazon Reviewer

This makes for an awesome fishing knife because of how easily it cuts through fish with it’s scaler and disgorger. However it isn’t good for much of anything else besides fishing purposes, thus making it a specialized knife. But still a very good fishing knife.

Wrap Up on My Choices for the Best Fishing Knives on the Market

Overall, I really like all of these knives however the one that takes the cake is either the Kershaw or Spyderco, because of how useful they are for not only fishing purposes, but cooking, working in the tool shed, cutting rope, or just about anything.

One thing you may have forgotten to mention when choosing a knife for fishing go for something stainless or with good corrosion resistance. May not be the strongest steel but if the dang thing rusts closed it ain’t gonna be of much use anyway. Forgive me if you mentioned that somewhere in there.
