For many reasons the Wusthof chef knife is listed as one of the best chef knives you can grab, why? Wusthof has been creating knives since 1814 in Germany and this means they have a ton of experience and know how when it comes to creating knives. They are the creators of PEtec which is technology that Wusthof uses to create superior sharpness and extending the durability of the knife. I will recommend Wusthof any day, because they do make superior knives compared to the rest, however this review is strictly for the Wusthof Classic chef knife. Let’s dig into it…
As mentioned above Wusthof has been in the knife making game for a while. They are a superior knife making company that is established in Germany, and have been supplying some of the best made knives out there. I wouldn’t say that Wusthof is the “Lamborghini” of knife making, but they are definitely an Audi A6.
However, with any product there are going to be people who stand by their products, and others… not so much. But in general there are a ton of people who love Wusthof, and we definitely recommend them because of how amazing their knives are. I would recommend only buying one knife, before you buy a whole set, because then you can get a feel for their knives.
The sharpness of the Wusthof chef knife is extremely sharp due to the PEtec, technology that they have when it comes to forming the knives. That is why we gave it a solid 4.5 out of 5 when it comes to sharpness. There are ton of followers of Wusthof who stand by their sharpness, and really their knives are so sharp they can cut through your onion in one solid motion, or even your 4 inch rib eye steak no problem.
But wait, what about the durability? Some people have complained that it doesn’t hold an edge very well, but in a general consensus the Wusthof chef knife holds an edge for a very long time. You just need to make sure that whenever you use it, that you wash and dry it right away. However with any product, you may get a knife that doesn’t hold an edge very well, BUT this is solved by the limited lifetime warranty which Wusthof will repair or change out due to a manufacturer defect. (yay!)
You won’t have to worry too much about sharpening your Wusthof Classic chef knife all of the time, but like any knife, it will need to go through maintenance every few weeks to months depending on how much you use it. However we only gave the knife a 3.8 out of 5 for durability because some people complained that it doesn’t hold an edge well.
In all reality, you won’t have to worry about dropping or it being flimsy. It is crafted with a bolster which adds more balance and strength to the blade, because it provides a transition between the knife and the handle. I find that bolsters are needed to make the knife truly stable and firm.
On top of this, the Wusthof does have a curved heel which makes it easier for you to hold onto the knife. It also comes with a triple riveted handle, which is useful for the reason that your fingers will feel natural while gripping it. Compared to the straight d-handle knives, this might feel a bit more natural to your hand, but it all depends on what you like.
Overall Wusthof’s chef knife handle is very well designed and that is why it received 4.5 out of 5.
Wusthof’s chef knife is designed with sharpness, and precision in mind, however what it lacks is the durability of the sharpness. This can be fixed though if you make sure to find the best knife sharpener out their to sharpen this knife. Overall we highly recommend the Wusthof chef knife.
