Review of The Wusthof Sharpening Steel

Wusthof Sharpening Steel

In-depth Review of the Wusthof Sharpening Steel

First thing firsts, this is a basic knife sharpener, but being basic doesn’t mean that it is bad. I really like the Wusthof because they make top notch knives and knife sharpeners. I find that this knife sharpener it’s too en-cumbersome and it sharpens your knives really well. Most people have left reviews on Amazon saying that they love it and it sharpens very nicely, however there are a few that are worrisome… so let’s dig into the overview of the Wusthof sharpening steel.

The Good: How Good Can it Sharpen Your Knives?

The Wusthof sharpening steel is large, but it gets the job done. The sharpening steel rod has a magnetic steel in it which allows the Wusthof to take off loose metal fibers on your knife giving it a sharp edge. From there the sharpening steel then sharpens up your knife to give your knife an even more sharp edge.

The Wusthof is created with a harder steel than most other manufacturers which gives means that it will sharpen your knives in 1-2 strokes, compared to most sharpening steels that sharpen in about 4-6 strokes. This saves a ton of time especially if you have a big collection of knives.

The Bad: How Long Can it Last?

It is said that the Wustof sharpening steel’s handle will fall off if you continually plop it into your knife block, which sucks because if it doesn’t have a handle then it is pretty much useless. However, this can be prevented if you place it with care into your knife block or if you lay it flat into a drawer.

If you are someone who doesn’t like to take 2 seconds to place this gently into knife blocks then you are going to run into trouble with the Wusthof, however if you take time and think about how you place the Wusthof into your block, then you will be fine.

The Design

  • Type: Sharpening Steel Rod
  • Weight: 9.8 Ounces
  • Features: Magnetic steel rod, loop to hang onto hook
  • Handle: Is slip resistant and is design to be ergonomic (very comfortable to hold)

The design of the Wusthof is simple, and is the same shape as most sharpening steels, but it does come with a magnetic steel rod, which helps with taking off loose metal fibers on your knives, making it easier to sharpen your knives. Yay!

On top of that, it does come with a loop to hang onto a hook in your kitchen, which can prevent you from breaking the handle off of it by plopping it into your knife block.

It also comes in 3 different sizes, of 9 inches, 10 inches and 12 inches, so if you want a shorter knife sharpener, that’s ok! And if you want a longer knife sharpener, they can give that to you as well!

So What’s The Bottom Line?

We recommend the Wusthof because it is basic, has a harder sharpening rod than most sharpening steels and has a magnetic steel which helps with taking off loose metal fibers on your knives. However, if you are worried about the handle coming off, then this isn’t a good fit for you, due to if you drop it into your knife block the handle can come off.

On top of that, if you want an electric sharpener then this wouldn’t be a good fit, because well… it is a manual sharpener.

The bottom line? The Wusthof makes sharpening a breeze, and is great at sharpening, but it is a basic manual sharpener.
